The Google sandbox is not a place you want your website to be so let’s discuss what it is and how to avoid the Google sandbox. There are two types of punishments Google can hand down to you. If you’ve been very naughty they will delist your site. That is what it sounds like; your site will no longer be found in the Google SERPs. To see if your site has been delisted you can go to Google and type in:

site:yourURL.com

If nothing appears with your URL in the results than you got a problem. Ok, but that is not the sandbox, that is delisting. So let’s get back to the Google sandbox. This is a lesser punishment handed down where you went from ranking for a keyword or phrase one day to the next day being nowhere to be found. Your site is still indexed in Google (which you can verify using the test above) but in the results you cannot find yourself. You have been sandboxed. In a nutshell, you have done something to upset Google, usually in terms of SEO and backlinking, and they are punishing you for a while by moving your site so far down in the rankings that you’ll get no traffic. Don’t jump off a bridge, this punishment is not permanent but it can last anywhere from a week to a few months.

Now that we all understand what the Google sandbox is let’s talk about how to avoid the sandbox. The most prevalent reason why sites are placed into the sandbox is that either they built a ton of backlinks in a short amount of time that looked very unnatural to Google, or you built spammy backlinks of garbage quality. Backlink diversity is very important. If you are only trying to build quanitity and so you go the route of creating a million backlinks via a tool like XRumer or Scrapebox you are temping the sandbox to come calling for your site. If your domain is aged you have a better chance of avoiding the sandbox but if you have a new site and you’re building a ton of backlinks that are not well diversified then there is a good chance your site will get sandboxed. Why is this? Think about it like this, let’s say a new site gets launched to a media buzz and everyone is talking about it. Maybe in its first week of launching there are 2 million backlinks created through the web to this new site. Now this site has no age, it has had a tremendous amount of backlinks built to it in a short time, but it is no sandboxed… because those 2 million backlinks are sure to be from a variety of places. Forums, articles, blog posts, comments, news releases, etc… Google will see that those backlinks are naturally generated and this hot new site will not be sandboxed. But now you come along. You made a site, you want to monetize the ads you put on it, but you need to get it ranked in the search engines. So you blast out 2 million backlinks. Bammmmm! Your site gets the penalty. Google is very smart, and attempting to trick Google with a no effort lazy man’s approach is not going to work. You are sandboxed. And there is more to consider. Remember those 2 million backlinks that the hot new site earned naturally, well there will be link Pagerank diversity in there. This is another good indicator to Google that the backlinks are natural. When you go out there and blast away to create backlinks, most of the backlinks that stick will be PR0 or PR1. If your site gets a ton of backlinks and they are all low quality Pagerank backlinks this sticks out like a sore thumb to Google. You need to diversify multiple ways when you build your backlinks.

You can avoid the Google sandbox by diversification of backlinks, by building backlinks slowly over time instead of trying to rush and get as many as possible in as short as possible, or you can focus on only building a few backlinks but which are found on very high pagerank pages. While Yahoo and Bing still really like to see a high number of backlinks, Google has begun to give more weight to the Pagerank of a site the backlink is found on more than how many backlinks in total your site has.

When you get out there and start to work your SEO game and generate backlinks make sure you understand what will sandbox your site and avoid doing it, or you could find your site a months in no man’s land.

To begin you need to understand what a 301 redirect is… this is basically a note to the search engines that you have moved your site to a new domain name. There are two ways to use this, legitimately and illegitimately. The proper way to use this is straightforward, you moved your site to a new domain and so anyone that comes to your old domain you will redirect them to the new domain. There is also a way to use this that might be of SEO benefit to you and which some of the top SEO guys I know use 301 redirects.

First off, I will say that I do not know with certainty if a 301 redirect provides a SEO benefit to your site. I will say that I know a handful of guys that swear by it though and they probably won’t be happy that I’m sharing this information (which may be common knowledge to some and new knowledge to others). Let’s suppose you want to start a new site. The domain age will be brand new. Google might sandbox your site if you immediately build a ton of backlinks to your site. And your site is starting with no pagetrust. Well, according to some a 301 redirect from an aged site will change that. Here’s how it works.

You go to a place like Godaddy.com Auctions and you use their filter options to find an aged domain. Something that is at least 10 years old. You can find them for $5 on up. Buy it.

Now, set up a simple one or two page site on that domain. It can be a WordPress based site or a simple css template or whatever. Write an article that is 1,500 to 2,000 words on the homepage that focuses on keywords of your new site that you want to benefit. Once you get that set up and post the article you should have a few thousand backlinks created to that website URL.

Check Google after a day or two. You want to see that the article was indexed. Once the article was indexed in Google we are going to set up the 301 redirect. Here’s the code that you need to add to your index file at the very top (remove the space between the opening “<" and "?") (replace "new_site" with your URL):

< ?
Header( "HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently" );
Header( "Location: http://www.new_site.com" );
?>

This will tell the search engines that you site has moved to this new domain. So now the search engines will see your new site as a site that is 10+ years old and just transferred to a new domain. It is believed that this will provide you with more pagetrust since it is viewed as an aged site. You also should be able to build a ton of backlinks now to your old site without getting sandboxed since the search engines should view your new site as really being older.

Now you will of course need to do more then a 301 redirect in order to rank a site well, but this could be a key step in helping you achieve those high SERPs that you are aiming for.

Passive income is the best type of income around. It is the income you can make while you sleep, while you pee, while you’re eating a sandwich while sitting on the sand at the beach. The way to get to passive income is a two step approach, first you must come up with a clever method and second you must implement the method. That is it. If it is truly passive then you can sit back and watch your commissions come rolling in.

Because passive income rocks so hard it is also a challenge to come up with great methods to earn it. Here is one method that pretty much cannot get saturated and has made myself (and plenty of other people) killer passive income. The concept: rent or trade to use someone’s signature space in a forum. That’s it, sounds simple, can be simple, can earn you cold hard cash in your hands, or could lead to a lot of frustration and no rewards. Let’s dig in a bit further.

First, you need to do some research. You can’t find random forums and get the signature space of random people. Whatever product or service you are going to promote you need to find a relevant forum. If you’re going to promote SEO software than you need to find internet marketing forums, SEO forums, etc… And once you have found the forums you need to find the right people whose signature space you are going to buy/rent. You want to use someone who has a ton of posts because their signature will be updated in all their posts. If there is a very popular thread that is sticky’d than see who the first post belongs to because that post is getting a ton of visibility. I’m not going to give away all my little tricks, but these two tips will give you a good head start.

Second, you need to offer them something. You can offer then cash, but this can add up quickly if you’re going big into this method. You could offer them a product or service (i.e. a free ebook, or a few hundred backlinks a month). Here’s something that smart people do. Offer then something you can find on Fiverr.com. I’ve offered people link pyramids where they get over 10,000 first and second tiers links in total and I get their signature space for a month. My cost is $5. If I make one sale in that month through their signature space I already quadrupled my investment there. Tons of ways to minimize your cost here, be creative.

Third, track track track. If you can track each signature space link/banner then do it. Some forums you will find are a bust with this method, the members there do not buy anything or don’t click on signature banners or links. Some forum members are a bust, if a member is not respected in a forum it is less likely anyone will click on their signature banner. So track what’s going on and find out what forums work well, and what members work well. When you find a member who is working well you could offer then some added incentive to maybe start a new thread to “discuss” whatever the product or service you are promoting is. Basically they will be building it up and making it sound like the greatest thing since sliced bread and this will generate clicks on their signature space.

Fourth, branch out. Once you start pulling in some cash don’t be idle. Get out there and attack new niches. Expand your current niche to more forums. Think about the possibilities. If you can get out to 500 signature spaces, and on average you will get 1 sale per day for every 20 signature spaces, and you earn a $20 commission per sale, you will be banking $500 a day in revenue. If you’re conversion rate is 1 in every 10 signature spaces per day you’re looking at a fat grand in your hand per day.

This method will take a little time to build up and test. If you’re looking for a quick buck in a week then avoid this method. But if you’re willing to put in the time and effort into this method, after 2-3 months it is realistic that you are pulling in at least $XXX per day.

I am a one man show. I don’t have any partners, I don’t split my profits 50/50 with anyone, I simply pocket everything I make. And one of the main drivers of me growing my profits is that I outsource everything under the sun that I can for dirt cheap. I need to spend my time focused on the stuff I consider the most important, the stuff that I don’t want anyone else touching or influencing. Usually that means concept development, project management, and monetization techniques. All my busy work I outsource. That is graphic design, content writing (except for Anticareer.com, this is all me), customer service, email response handling, website design/development, coding and scripts, software products and bots, etc…

There are a few sites online where you can find outsourced workers and I’ve used them all. In the end, there is one which for me has the workers that have the right mix of quality, price, skills, and motivation and that is Odesk (visit them now!). The way that Odesk works is very simple and user friendly and I can explain it in about 30 seconds so here we go:

1. Register on the site. Registration is free. You are required to provide a credit card number in order to post a job. This is because when you have to pay someone it is taken from your credit card on file. (I’ve used them for a few years now and have never had any issue with money or payments)

2. Post a job. You select the category (so if you want Content Writing, or Software Programming, etc…). You enter a job title and job description. Here’s a very helpful tip that will save you some time, make your job title very detailed and same with the description. And if you are looking to hire someone for dirt cheap, put “$1/Hour Pay” in the title. This will help save you time from receiving quotes from people who want $5 or $10/hour. Now, you won’t find a software programmer for $1/hour, but you will certainly find backlink builders, article writers, customer service and email response workers, and other jobs similar to these.

3. It takes 20 minutes for your job posting to go live (I think Odesk reviews the job postings to ensure nothing illegal or shady is going on). After it goes live you will start getting people who will apply to your job. Wait a day or two. Once you get a good number of candidates read through their responses and look at their pay rate. You want to find someone whose response shows that they read your job description in full and that they understand it and have some type of experience. You can also look at their rating (5.0 being the highest/best rating) from previous people who had hired them. Between their response, their rating, and their pay rate you will then need to decide who the best all around fit it.

4. Hire the person. When you hire them you should then send them a message. Introduce yourself. And give them as much information/detail about the job as possible. Remember, if you do not explain things then they will be left to make decisions on their own, and most people do not want this.

5. Review their work. For my content writers I review their work for the first week and take a long hard look at it to make sure they are giving me what I requested. Once they build trust through quality work I will then review their work once a week to make sure they aren’t slacking.

And there you have it. By letting people do the small tasks you can free up your time to focus on the big tasks. By doing this you should be able to maximize your time and pull in more profits (or at least I am). Being an ‘employer’ does take a little time to get used to. Really explaining things clearly and in depth was the biggest thing I learned I needed to do, so I just saved you some growing pains. Now get that money!

Whether you are new to earning money online through CPA offers or you’ve been around the block a few times, email & zip submits ...

Whether you are new to earning money online through CPA offers or you’ve been around the block a few times, email & zip submits are one of the most basic ways to earn a paycheck. Email submits are great for newbies because the action required is very straightforward and can understood even by the most green internet marketer. And they are great for advanced IMers because if you find a method that works well you have the experience to scale it up quickly to start ringing the register in a big way.

A brief overview of what an email or zip submit is: it is a one page landing page where the goal is to send people to it who will either submit their email address or their zip code (depending on what that specific offer requires). The landing page will usually offer the person a free gadget or gift card. But in order for the visitor to earn that free item they need to complete offers. These offers are CPA offers that will earn the landing page owner a commission, and if the visitor does not complete the offers according to the stringent rules in the fine print they will not receive their free item. They pay anywhere from $0.75 to $5.00 per email or zip submit. Many moons ago before I was familiar with internet marketing I ended up on an email submit landing page for a 50 inch TV. I went through the entire process of completing offers (which took about 3 hours of my time and about $80). At that time, this TV would retail for around $1,000 so it was worth it to me. The final step was to fill out a claim form where you had to enter your name, address, social security number, and a few other pieces of information. I entered it all out except I put the wrong social security number (on purpose because I had no idea who would be receiving this paperwork and if they were trustworthy or not). Somehow (and I’m still not sure how) they found out I put an incorrect social security number and sure enough in the fine print this was enough to void me from receiving my free TV. And now let’s get back to the present…

There are TONS of methods to do well with email and zip submit offers. There are also a few tools that you could use which will help immensely and pay for themselves after a day or two. But I’ll save the more advanced discussion for another post.

Let’s talk about an easy method that anyone can do, even if you don’t have a penny to your name. Article submissions. Whenever I have someone ask me for a method that they can do and where they don’t need money I tell them this method (and from now on I’ll just give them the URL of this post and save myself some breath). Find an email or zip submit offer (I prefer zip submit offers because I’ve always found they convert at a higher rate for me) that you think is attractive to people. As an example, one that I was promoting recently was a zip submit offer for people to save money on car insurance. The landing page says something along the lines of “Save Up to $500 a Year on Your Car Insurance… Enter your zip code to see offers in your local area”. Entering a zip code is not as personal as an email address so people are willing to go through this first step without much hesitation. So here’s what you do:

1. Write an article. I’m not going to tell you what or how to write it. But if we’re using my example of a zip submit offer to lower your car insurance, write an article that will get people’s interest about lowering their car insurance. Somewhere near the middle of the article put a link to your zip submit affiliate link (make sure you use anchor text, you can also use a URL shortener service if you don’t want people to see that ugly affiliate link if they hover over your hyperlink). The most important thing about writing the article is that you need to get their interest that will carry over when they visit the zip submit page.

2. Take your article and submit it to tons of free article directory sites. There are literally thousands of these online. There are also automated tools to make this process fast for you but they cost money and I said I’d keep this method cost free. I’d also consider setting up free blogs or pages to post your article on (such as Squidoo, Blogger, WordPress, etc…). These sites will rank higher in the search engines than the article directory sites.

3. Now you can either sit back and wait to see if commissions start coming in, or you can do some more work and create backlinks to your articles. I’d focus on only 2 or 3 articles that you successfully submitted and start backlinking to them. I’ve seen many articles from sites like Squidoo rank on the first page of Google.

4. If you want to put in some more work you can try getting people to spread your article on Facebook or Twitter. Ask anyone you know to recommend your webpage through their social media accounts.

5. If the vendor allows it, go onto Craigslist and post an add for people who want to lower their car insurance by $500 a year. When people email you, write back to them with either the link to one of your articles or the affiliate link to your zip submit page. If you are a real go getter you should try each of these to different people and track which one converts better. This way in the future you know how where to send them.

As mentioned, this is a beginners method that anyone can do without cash or without knowledge of internet marketing. You can take this method and use it to generate your first cash online which you can take and then use to buy yourself a tool to automate your work, or a domain and hosting, or whatever. But don’t take your money and blow it on a bag of weed and some Mickey D’s. The way to become a real internet marketer who is successful is always to reinvest your money and don’t blow it on crap.

When it comes to SEO everyone has their own opinion and everyone thinks their opinion is right. Me too. Exact match domains (EMD) are exactly what they sound like. If you wanted to create a site to target the keyword phrase “New York Attractions” the EMD would be NewYorkAttractions.com or .net or .org. In case you’ve been living under a rock with the Fraggles, .com is what you should always go with if it is available. If not available and you have a choice between .net and .org I would see what your keyword phrase is about and see if it fits into the .org mindset (which to me is that .org’s look like authority sites about topics that are serious or important). So for NewYorkAttractions I’d prefer the .net over the .org. I don’t think Google cares either way in terms of the SERPs if you have a .net or .org, but I think having the right extension can increase the percentage of clicks you get from people after they search Google. If I was going to have a site about health, actually I do have a site about health, and the .com was taken and I chose the .org extension over the .net extension. Health to me is a serious topic, when people search for health related items they want an authority site and the .org extension has that in people’s minds.

OK, so I strayed a bit from the topic, getting back to it now I would buy an EMD whenever you can over a non-EMD. This will help you in the game of SEO. I speak from experience. And if the EMD is not available try adding a letter and see if that domain is available.

Example: I would rather buy eNewYorkAttractions.com or iNewYorkAttractions.com than StuffinNewYork.com or NewYorkInformationNow.com

I’ve had some very solid success by adding an “e” or “i” to the front of a domain name in order to get the next best thing to the EMD (in my warped mind)! But don’t think that you can buy an exact match domain and you’ll be at the top of Google’s results based purely on the EMD. That could have happened years ago, but it won’t happen today. It will help you but it is just a piece of SEO. You still will need to do backlinking, have good content, make sure your meta tags and H1/H2 are set up properly, among many other factors. So long story short, if you can get the EMD than get it, it will only help you on your way to making money.

Let me take a wild guess… you are not making any money online! Are you? Don’t hang your head, we’ve all been there. In fact, the first two years I was online trying to make money I ended up losing thousands of dollars. My problem was that I was trying to run an online business before I ever knew anything about running an online business. The critical lesson that I gleaned from failure is that I need to learn before I do. Before you spend your time or your money or your energy trying to make a living online you should read. Read and learn as much as you can. It is true that the internet changes very frequently, but learning the concepts will prove to be invaluable to you.

When you read and learn you should be open to as much as you can take it. There’s a lot of interconnectivity online and making money online. Knowing about domain names relates to keyword research which relates to Adsense monetization which relates to developing a website which relates to onsite and offsite SEO which relates to understanding how search engines work (just as one little example). Don’t be fooled into thinking you can become an expert in just one thing and you will be successful. You need to understand the full path of things and this is where a lot of people fail. They don’t learn enough. They try doing before they truly understand. They fail. And then they give up. Lucky for me that I’m a stubborn mule and after failing for two years I still didn’t give up, otherwise I wouldn’t be here writing this today and my life would be much different.

When you read and learn a lot you’ll get a ton of ideas and concepts running through your head. You’ll want to start about 50 projects at once. It’s natural, it happened to me, and I quickly learned that starting too many projects is a sure way to get off the track that you want to be on… you get spread too thin and you end up with 50 incomplete projects. I’d recommend you start with two projects. This will give you a little variety, it will give you two chances at succeeding, you will learn about two different concepts/methods as you develop them, and you should be able to maintain focus and put a solid effort into each project. Once you hone your online abilities you will be able to expand. You can add another project into the mix, or (my favorite) you can begin to outsource some work or even full projects to other people. Outsourcing is great because it allows me to not have to become an expert at coding or programming or website development among other things. I can focus on what I know best and that is project development and than I can hire people through the computer to do what they know best on my behalf. And outsourcing does not need to break the bank. I have people who do simple tasks for me that work for $1/hour. I have other people that do more technical work for me that work for $10/hour. And if I need someone highly specialized I’ve paid up to $25/hour. If you want to look more into finding an outsourced worker there’s one site that I recommend and this is where I find 95% of my outsourced workers, you can check out that site here.

Remember, my advice to you is to learn before you do. Even if you spend a few months just reading, learning, asking questions, and gaining a ton of knowledge that is a few months well spent. You’ll hit bumps in the road along the way just like everyone does, but by gaining that knowledge up front you can minimize the amount of bumps you hit.

If you are using Adsense to monetize your website or webpages you have had to make the decision on how many ads to use, what size, what placement, text vs image, among other choices. I could fill a book talking about all the different options, testing, monetization performance, etc… concerning putting Adsense on your site but today in this post I’m going to talk only about the quantity of Adsense boxes I use. I use one. That was easy, huh? So why do I use one? Testing, testing, testing. Consider a keyword, let’s say “dog food”. If you think about the advertisers on Adwords for this keyword, picture them as a ladder. The highest paying advertiser is the top rung, all the way to the bottom advertiser at the bottom rung. There may be 50 or 100 advertisers bidding for this keyword.

We all obviously want the top rung advertisers to put their ads on our site because they pay the most. Ideally, the advertisers paying the most will also have smart ads that entice people to click them so the CTR should be higher when you have the top quality advertisers’ ads on your site versus the low rung peons. In an ad box you may have 3 or 4 advertisers’ ads. If your site is a quality site, good content, and good SEO than it is likely the ads shown on your site will be of higher quality (i.e. higher up on the rung ads). What happens if you put two more ad boxes on your site? A few things actually…

Your site begins to look like a site trying to get people to click on ads, rather than a useful and respectable site. When people land on a site that is littered with ads they will jump off that page quickly. This will increase your bounce rate and lead to a shorter ‘average time on site per user’ metric and I believe both these play into Google’s SERPs. But putting that aside, now instead of having 4 ads in one ad box of higher on the rung ads, you are adding 8 more ads on your site of lower rung advertisers. Why is this a problem? Because you will lower your CPC. If a user was going to click on an ad, with only one ad box they would guaranteed to be clicking on one of those 4 ads which were higher on the rung, but now with 12 advertisements on the site you are offering them the option to click on a lower run ad. I had a site where one click would bring me over $10 per click, and another click would bring me less than $1. This is when my site was littered with ads back in the day. After I removed all the ad boxes except for one I saw my average CPC earnings go up almost 50%. Because… (are you following me)… I removed the lower rung ads from my site by only putting one ad box on there. But don’t take my word for it, if you’re one of those Adsense box lovers who proliferate your site with as many Adsense ad boxes as their policy allows try removing all those boxes by one and see what happens. You might just become a one Adsense box monogamous type of guy/gal from now on.
